Background

Carbon anodes are used in the reduction process, which operates about 960 to make aluminium. The electrolyte or molten“BATH” as it is commonly known, is predominantly made of recycled cryolite, with addition of alumina and other materials as necessary to maintain the desired chemistry. The carbon anodes are supported in the molten bath by copper and cast steel "anode rod assemblies" (conductors) joined to the carbon with molten castin iron to form a "complete anode assembly". These complete anode assemblies are prepared in the Rodding Room.

The anodes are consumed to about one quarter of their original weight over a period of about 18 days in the reduction process. After service the spent carbon anodes are returned to the Rodding Room for the removal so that the anode rod assemblies can be resued. The anode rod assemblies act as both a mechnical support and to transfer the largeg amounts of electrial current to the anode.

Chemical Composition

Cast steel gusset shall come suppplied with appropriate material certificates to verify the material to the standard AS 2074-2003, Grade C2 and chemical composition specified in table below.
